Amongst a large number of interesting applications of the JG Speedfit push-fit system, Dr Andrew Mason, pioneer of the Speedfit ‘bougie’ case, brought a recent medical application to our attention. Dr Mason, who is a trauma and immediate care specialist, has designed a case for ‘bougies’ using JG’s push-fit plumbing range.
A ‘bougie’ is a long, thin, flexible rod used by doctors in the process of tracheal intubation – inserting a breathing tube into the human windpipe, often as part of emergency medical help. These rods are extremely delicate and should be kept sanitized and protected from heat at all times. The ‘bougie’ case in question has been designed to fill a gap in the current market.
Speedfit components used are the straight connector, collet locking clip, stop-end and pipe insert, besides the actual Speedfit Pex barrier pipe. Dr Mason works with British Association for Immediate Care, a voluntary organization responsible for life-saving work. His design was accepted by international medical journal, Anaesthesia, for publication in December 2011.
